We love to
help create beautiful smiles, and we are happy to offer many cosmetic
dental services. Our first objective is to support the lifelong
optimal health for your teeth and gums, and all our cosmetic procedures
will have health as a main ingredient to beautiful esthetics.
Whitening of
tooth enamel is safe and provides excellent results for most patients. The main ingredient in
all whitening products is a peroxide solution. This solution
varies in the way it is delivered to the enamel and the strength. Although
the whitening of the teeth is quite stable, there can be some re-darkening
of teeth over time, and the whitening process may need brief touch-ups
over time.
Here are some options for whitening:
Over the
counter whitening products, such as Crest Whitestrips, can often be effective. They
provide lower-strength peroxide to the teeth with either a gel or a strip that
is coated with the whitening product. We recommend following the manufacturer’s
instructions, and caution our patients not to overuse the product. Since
these techniques allow more material to be swallowed than other techniques,
there is a risk of esophageal irritation if overused.
For a stronger,
faster whitening process, we offer a custom-made tray that fits your teeth
precisely to hold the whitening peroxide gel most accurately to your teeth.
For this procedure, we take impressions, or molds, of your teeth and custom
fabricate a soft plastic tray that the patient wears at home with the whitening
material inside. For maximum whitening, the patient wears this tray at
home for 30 minutes a day for two weeks. As mentioned above, a brief
30-minute touch-up with the whitening trays may be needed every several months
in order to keep teeth their whitest.
For a more
immediate whitening result, we offer an in-office whitening procedure where
the strongest whitening material can be used. This procedure takes about
2 hours in our office, and the patient does receive custom-made trays that
fit precisely in order to enhance or touch-up the whitening over time.
Bonded Resin Restorations are
another way that teeth can be enhanced cosmetically. Composite resin can be
bonded directly to enamel to change the shape and appearance of teeth
in one office visit. At an office consultation, we can give
you an exact idea of how the bonded teeth will look. Spaces
can be closed, discolored areas covered, and fractures successfully
repaired. Bonded resin restorations typically last around a
6 - 10 before needing to be replaced.
Porcelain Veneers are
an excellent option for many anterior teeth where the patient desires
significant changes in teeth color, shape, and/or size. A porcelain veneer is created in
the laboratory and then bonded to the tooth. These restorations
give superior esthetic results, and can last many, many years. They
can fill spaces and subtly change the shape and length of anterior
teeth. This procedure requires two office visits, where the
patient will have temporary veneers for two to three weeks prior
to the final placement of the porcelain veneers. Some teeth
may not be appropriate for veneers, and at an office consultation,
we can tell you all the options available to you.
Orthodontic treatment of
teeth is often a great option to treat crowded or crooked teeth. Although
we do not directly provide orthodontic care in our office, we work
with terrific orthodontists in our community that can give you excellent
results with your esthetic and oral health needs. |
